It has been with great pleasure that we have begun working with the amazing staff from Kirkwood Hospice. For 30 years, Kirkwood Hospice, based in Dalton, Huddersfield, have provided outstanding care for the people of Kirklees. Kirkwood Hospice provides specialist care, free of charge, to adults in Kirklees with advanced, progressive illnesses at any time from diagnosis to the end of life, respecting their individual needs and wishes. Care and support is also provided for their family members, friends and carers, both during the illness and after death. Through education, training and partnership with others, the Hospice improves care for everyone affected by a life-limiting illness. Whether at the Hospice, in the home or out in the community, the Hospice make sure that those in their care have the opportunity to live the best quality of life possible and are able to make the most of the time they have left.

One of our members started their voluntary work placement in the Kirkwood Hospice charity shop in Newsome this January, they are currently working alongside their staff to support this great cause. This placement has allowed Pippa to feel more independent during her time at the centre. Despite it being a gradual program both Pippa and the staff from Kirkwood were happy for her to attend her placement on her own from the second week! This has been incredible for Pippa, her confidence is already showing, unsurprisingly since she has flourished in the work environment. Pip has been having a lot of fun at the shop and comes back chatting about everything she has done, so far, she has helped to prepare and tag clothing items and she cannot wait to get onto the till and start helping customers.

We have also had the pleasure of working with Lucy Green from the Kirkwood Hospice Media and Marketing team, we have worked together to highlight Pippa’s incredible accomplishment and her story can be read on the Kirkwood Hospice website. Lucy came and did an interview and photo shoot with Pip, she found this very exciting and was looking forward to the story coming out for weeks. There are no words to describe how proud she felt when she saw her picture in the Kirkwood Hospice newsletter, she said she was gobsmacked and just couldn’t believe it. Pippa has a personal connection to the hospice as they have supported family friends when they have been in need and is so proud she has been able to contribute to a cause that means so much to her. Charlotte Shaw the shop manager has been very supportive and with her amazing team of volunteers has made Pip feel at home straight away. We at the centre are so proud of this outcome and grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such a lovely team from Kirkwood.
